Through the Woods by Emily Carroll

This hauntingly beautiful, and at-times terrifying graphic novel will delight anyone with a taste for the supernatural. Featuring five short graphic stories in which the woods come into play, Carroll’s masterful art will make readers feel they are part of the darkness themselves. The tales have a “Twilight Zone” feel to them and all seem to be set in a time long ago. Red and black prevail as dominant colors, but Carroll is not afraid to add brighter tones to assist in conveying a mood. The text is sparse and much of it acts as a part of the art, flowing across the pages in a haunting voice. Each story is unique, standing on its own, leaving its imprint on the reader. There is a general sort of creepiness about the whole book (you may look over your shoulder as you’re reading to see if you’re being watched), but if you like that sort of thing, you will love this book.

Join us for May as we discuss Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero and The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. We'll also have snacks and each person attending will be entered into a raffle to win a book of their choice!

Teen Book Club Happenings

April 29, 2015

April's Teen Book Club meeting was a success! We made duct tape pouches and discussed Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson and The Young Elites by Marie Lu. Everyone decided that these were both books worth reading! For May we'll be reading Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero and The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. Quintero just won the William C. Morris YA Debut Award for Gabi, A Girl in Pieces and Stiefvater has an incredible social media presence. You can check her out on Twitter @mstiefvater.

Come to the Melrose Park Public Library on Tuesday, March 10th from 5-6 p.m. for Retro Tech! Take a step back in time to explore & experiment with devices everyone used for game-playing, music-listening, photo-taking, and computing before smartphones and tablets. Grades 7-12.
