Book Review - Through the Woods by Emily Carroll

May 18, 2015

Through the Woods by Emily Carroll

This hauntingly beautiful, and at-times terrifying graphic novel will delight anyone with a taste for the supernatural. Featuring five short graphic stories in which the woods come into play, Carroll’s masterful art will make readers feel they are part of the darkness themselves. The tales have a “Twilight Zone” feel to them and all seem to be set in a time long ago. Red and black prevail as dominant colors, but Carroll is not afraid to add brighter tones to assist in conveying a mood. The text is sparse and much of it acts as a part of the art, flowing across the pages in a haunting voice. Each story is unique, standing on its own, leaving its imprint on the reader. There is a general sort of creepiness about the whole book (you may look over your shoulder as you’re reading to see if you’re being watched), but if you like that sort of thing, you will love this book.
